Graffiti is one of the three elements of hip-hop culture, the other two being, B Boying (break dancing) and music (rapping, Dj'ing, production etc).

Graffiti is not a new phenomenon; people have been marking their identity on to surfaces and structures for thousands of years. The word “graffiti” is an Italian word meaning ‘scratchings' and refers to writings and drawings scribbled or sprayed onto walls or other public places. It may be illegal on the streets, but graffiti art has been ‘legitimised' and is becoming a serious art form both indoors and out. It's also used for promotional and advertising campaigns.

Graffiti art has its roots on the streets of New York and Chicago during the 1960s. It became part of hip-hop culture during the 1980s along with break dancing and rapping.
